Sketch Of The Week

sketch 19

The two-headed monster from Ricky Raccoon and the Recycling Ray was a fun puppet to design. I wanted the two heads to be complete opposites of each other. In this black-and-white concept drawing you can see that the plastic head is round and bulky, whereas the aluminum head is sharp and angular.

Sketch Of The Week

sketch 22

Before I paint one of our puppet show backgrounds, I do a series of rough sketches. For our puppet show Harry and the Tyrannosaurus Rex I wanted to accurately represent Montana during the Late Cretaceous period. I did some research about the different types of plants and trees of the time. I learned that grass hadn't appeared yet, the most common trees were conifers, and flowers were a rare find. I incorporated the information I learned into this color pencil sketch.

Here is another very early sketch I drew for Hazel and the Dragon. I drew this in pen before the script was done as the story was beginning to take shape.

Sketch Of The Week

sketch 24

I designed this character, Shakespeare The Frog, for Naked TV, a stage show produced by Naked Angels theater company and Fox Broadcasting. Naked TV featured several one-act plays written by new writers. Shakespeare was one of three American Idol-style judges who watched the show from a balcony over the stage and offered unusual feedback.

Here is a concept drawing I did for the Prince of the Sea for our holiday show, Polly Polar Bear and the Prince of the Sea. I researched different types of Arctic fish before designing this character. The hooked bottom jaw and spotted pattern of the Arctic char, a native Canadian fish, were incorporated in this design.

Here is a rough design I drew of the Glass Monster from our puppet show Ricky Raccoon and the Recycling Ray. Knowing that Ricky Raccoon was going to feature our largest puppet cast, I designed this character to be a small rod puppet. In the show he's like a small dog: bold, threatening and very transportable.

Boots Wow

Here is a wacky drawing of Boots I did for our new show Rex & Boots, Super Sleuths. This character design was inspired by some cute Japanese cartoon characters.

Rex

OK, so it's not a sketch. This is a photo of Rex, one of the puppets I built for our new show Rex & Boots, Super Sleuths. I'm very happy with the shape of his muzzle and the placement of his eyes.

I added maroon eyelids to the puppet that weren't in the original design to separate Rex's eyes from his gray face. The touch of maroon goes well with the stripes on his hat.

I'll post the last two installments of my interview with Ed Eyth next week.

Sketch Of The Week

pug

This is a design for Rivet the Dog, from our new puppet show B.A.R.K. The Robot Dog. Rivet was originally called Doug the Pug, but that was changed when we made his owner an inventor.

I'll post the nest installment of my interview with Ed Eyth on Monday.

sketch 4

Here is an early sketch I did of B.A.R.K. The Robot Dog. I was playing with the idea of not giving him a moving mouth and instead having him speak from a concealed voice box, like C-3PO. Ultimately this idea was abandoned because it put too many limitations on B.A.R.K.'s movement possibilities.
